A public preview of 9147 active corporations and LLCs registered in Jefferson County, NY, built from open government data. Free to browse, non-commercial, refreshed periodically.

Data sources

NY Department of State — Active Corporations (data.ny.gov dataset n9v6-gdp6). All currently-active corporations and LLCs in NY, filtered to Jefferson County.
City of Watertown GIS (maps.watertown-ny.gov) for the parcel cross-reference. 9,135 parcels with owner names matched against the LLC registry.

What's not here yet

Sole proprietorships and DBAs. When someone operates as "Smith Lawn Care" without forming an LLC or corporation, they file a Certificate of Assumed Name with the Jefferson County Clerk, not with NY State. Those records aren't currently in this directory. Many one-person handymen, gardeners, masons, and snowplow operators in the North Country operate this way — so this directory undercounts them. Request to the Jefferson County Clerk is on the roadmap.

Coverage of Jefferson County itself

Of the 23 municipalities in Jefferson County (population ~117,000), only the City of Watertown publishes parcel data via a public GIS service. The other 22 towns — including Le Ray, which hosts Fort Drum — are opaque to public GIS because Jefferson County did not opt in to the NY State Statewide Parcel Program. We cover that gap separately.

Categorization

Each business is tagged with a primary trade/business category by matching keywords in its registered name. The classifier is deliberately conservative — about half of the 9,147 entries remain uncategorized because their names are person-based or generic (e.g., "JKM Holdings LLC"). False positives are rare; false negatives are common. If your business is miscategorized, contact us — this preview is intended to improve.

What this directory is for

This is a public preview while we figure out the right way to serve Jefferson County. Existing options (the chamber of commerce site, Google Maps, paper Yellow Pages) miss the long tail of small operators that actually run a lot of local business. We want to make those discoverable.
